How to Get Your Esthetician License in Hawaii

Hawaii licenses estheticians through the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology under DCCA. Estheticians receive a Beauty Operator license with the esthetician classification under HRS Chapter 439. You need this license to perform facials, skin treatments, body wraps, hair removal, and related services for compensation.

Hawaii requires 600 training hours and only a written exam — no practical exam. No reciprocity with any state and no CE required. Hawaii’s esthetician scope is relatively broad, including full-body exfoliation and wrapping (with gloves/tools). Here is exactly how to get your Hawaii esthetician license.

Hawaii’s esthetician scope includes massaging, cleansing, stimulating, manipulating, exercising, and beautifying the scalp, face, neck, hands, arms, bust, upper body, legs, and feet. It also covers full-body cleansing, exfoliating, and wrapping (without direct hand contact, using gloves, loofah mitts, or brushes) and removing superfluous hair by means other than electrolysis.

Full-time students typically complete the program in 4 to 6 months.

Apprenticeship alternative: A 1,200-hour beauty apprenticeship is available (2:1 ratio to school hours).

At 600 hours, Hawaii matches the national average. See our esthetician license guide and hours by state comparison.
